Announcing the first in our new fundraising t-shirt series:

Zz LOVES KC

This t-shirt series is designed to celebrate our city by highlighting historic locations, communities, people, and ideas. Each month we are asking a new artist to design a shirt that shines a light on something they love about the history of Kansas City.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of this *limited edition* shirt will be used to subsidize instructor salary at Zz School. FYI, instructors at Zz School are paid more per contact hour than adjunct instructors at the leading art school in our city!

Our first shirt was designed by illustrator and comics maker Kelsey Wroten in honor of Kansas City's WOMONTOWN. This shirt was discharge printed on a 100% cotton shirt. The surface is smooth with a "no ink" super soft feel and comes with a mini-zine tag which includes a short article about Womontown written by Rachel Mesplay Helm.

EXCERPT: "In the mid-nineties, Kansas City was home to an intentional Lesbian neighborhood called Womontown.  Its heart was the intersection of 28th and Harrison and radiated out through the Longfellow neighborhood to house 75 Lesbian womyn and their children.  This was not a colony or a commune.  This was a diverse group of sisters, living independently, with no set agenda, manifesto, or leadership....

They looked at their Midtown Kansas City neighborhood, which in this period was victim to blight, slumlords, transience, and crime.  What if the abandoned homes on their block were occupied by a groovy set of like-minded Lesbians, transforming overgrowth into gardens, looking out for each other, and lifting each other up."

Rachel and Kelsey used the Barbara Lea collection at GLAMA in the production of this T-shirt and text. Visit GLAMA!
