Course Description:

This course is a power lesson in how to letterpress print calling cards, with an emphasis on how letterpress can be used as a strategy for up-ending common business tactics.

Historically, the mass dissemination of information (made possible by printmaking) has compelled and expanded the market economy. In this class we seek ways to both use and abuse such pernicious profiteering through subversive print media. We wander into the history of print and it’s relationship to advertising and then imagine alternate worlds wherein ‘business is booming’.

On the first day of class we start as researchers, embarking on a day long field trip. We'll meet with various independent business owners working in the gray areas of not-so-commercial commerce. Later, we unpack what magnetic qualities these enterprises do or do not posses, as well as where in the cross hair’s we are situated as the ‘target audience’. Next class everyone will come prepared with a proposed name, concept, and slogan for a start-up business they can launch immediately with nothing but a calling card. We will then learn how to compose, lock-up, and print a form on a Chandler & Price press, having our jobs complete and ready for sharing on the final day of class.

Each participant can expect to make an edition of 200-250 calling cards.
